For more advanced students and students who want to stay for prolonged periods and really master Japanese, we also have courses at your level, tailored to suit your needs.

Japanese standard

Information

The standard Japanese course is available for short courses (1 - 23 weeks) or long duration (24+ weeks).
A long stay programme is made up of 2 blocks of 10 weeks with a 3 week holiday in the middle, so you would have 20 weeks of courses and a duration of 23 weeks from the 40th week.

General Japanese courses are available at Genki language school to cater for students at all levels.
For experienced and more advanced students the nuances of Japanese grammar will be covered as well as classes aimed at extending both your comprehension (reading and listening) and production (e.g. speaking) abilities.
For beginners, classes begin on the first Monday of each month (the first and third Monday in the months of June, July and August). Lessons take place both in the classroom and outside. After you’ve learnt several important Japanese language principles, as well as basic grammar, you’ll head out onto the street, accompanied by your Japanese language teacher, to put what you’ve learnt into practice! A few exercises may include:

  • Calling a theatre and asking if seats are available
  • Ordering sushi
  • Making a reservation at a restaurant
  • Asking for directions
  • Shopping for various goods.

Of course, each exercise is tailored to your level of Japanese, so you won’t be thrown in the deep end!

Japanese + conversation

Information

Students taking this course must have basic knowledge of Japanese, as you’ll participate in conversational exercises that require you to be able to express yourself. In addition to the standard Japanese language lessons, you’ll take an additional 5 hours of conversational classes each week. These 5 classes concentrate on specific aspects of conversation, such as dialects, specialized vocabulary and the use of slang. The structure of this course remains similar to the standard Japanese language lessons, in which some lessons are taught in the classroom, while others are taught outside.

Japanese + traditional culture

This course runs for no more than 4-5 weeks long, depending on the number of Mondays in the month.
With a focus on traditional Japanese culture and history, this course is for language students who would also like to learn about this country’s fascinating past. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in all sorts of cultural workshops, alongside local Japanese, including:

  • A visit to the Touchou temple
  • A visit to the Kushida tomb
  • Calligraphy lessons
  • A traditional tea ceremony
  • An introduction to traditional Hakata art forms
  • Meditation

Japanese pop culture is not only an important and iconic scene within Japan, but its popularity has grown in countries around the world over the last few decades. Back at home, various aspects of Japanese pop culture contrast starkly with the country’s more traditional and cultural values, which are still very present. Students taking this course will participate in 20 standard Japanese language lessons, while also exploring various aspects of Japan’s pop culture, by choosing 3 weekly activities from an extensive list, including:

  • Drawing manga cartoons
  • Writing manga scripts
  • Japanese cooking lessons
  • Visiting a computer manufacturer
  • Shopping in stores that specialise in Japanese pop culture
